Without a large campus or self-contained recreation program, Castle is rich in opportunities in its surrounding community. We enthusiastically utilize the large array of cultural, historical and recreational opportunities available in the Boston/Cambridge area and with two agency vehicles, farther afield. Without the huge logistical issues of a large group, theater, spectator sports, museums, coffeehouses, local events, and nearby colleges and universities are easily accessible. Roller-skating, ice-skating, bowling, movies, sailing and neighborhood playing fields are at our fingertips. Educational field trips are frequent and make history and literature come alive. We make extensive use of our special relationship with the YMCA and on the grounds we have a small basketball court, an exercise room, the availability of bicycles, and lots of in-house supplies for quieter activities.
Our annual Switch Day the week of April Fool’s Day is designed to give students and staff each an experience in the other’s world. In May each year we create a vegetable garden, later found at our table, and beautify our yard. In addition, when the student is ready for more independent recreational activities, classes in a community center or Y, college extension courses or sports programs are options.
Three times a year extended 4-day trips take the students into rural New England during weeks there are no classes. These include a camping and hiking trip in June, a white-water rafting and rock-climbing trip in August and a New Hampshire ski trip at the end of February.
